How the ACME 500 Pigeon call and Dove call began
In the Industrial revolution a toolmaker from Derbyshire called Joseph Hudson converted his wash house at the side of his end terrace into a workshop where he made many things to help increase his family’s income. His early products were snuff boxes, cork screws and the ACME pigeon call or dove call.
It was not only till 1883 did his whistles business take off. The Police communicated by means of a rattle, but it was cumbersome and could not be hear in places where there crowds or over long distances, so they advertised for an idea to replace the policeman’s rattle and Joseph took up the challenge.
The whistle was much smaller and lighter than the rattle and could be held in the mouth leaving the hands free. The dilemma was in finding a distinctive sound that would be heard over some distance.
The police tested his whistle in a London park called Clapham Common and were happy when it could be clearly heard over a mile away.
Over the next 135 years ACME developed and patented over 40 different whistle designs producing a number of different whistles including the ACME 500 Pigeon call and dove call design.
